The Benefits of Online Counselling

Written by Soph Mazza

In today’s digital age, the internet has become such a massive part of our lives! It serves as this haven where we are able to connect with others, learn new things, seek information, and explore and express our passions. Online counselling, also known as tele-therapy or e-therapy, has become popular in recent years, with more and more people turning to the internet for mental health support and resources.

Because this is a relatively new form of mental health care, you may be wondering what the benefits and differences of online counselling are! Virtual counselling sessions offer convenience, accessibility, comfort, and safety in your own space to address your mental health needs.

With just a computer or cellphone and an internet connection, you can connect with a counsellor that is the perfect match for you. Your sessions can be done through phone calls, or video sessions, providing a private, secure, confidential, and safe space for you to access support.

I know how challenging it can be to prioritize your mental health. When we are juggling work, family, friends, and personal commitments among other things, it often leaves us with little time to take care of ourselves, practice self-care, and give ourselves the love and attention we deserve.

One of the benefits of online counselling is the accessibility, convenience, and comfort. It allows access to individuals who do not have reliable transportation or childcare, who are not feeling well enough to leave their home, those who are juggling a busy schedule, or individuals living in rural communities. You don’t have to worry about other factors that may be holding you back from prioritizing your mental health. This allows you to be consistent in receiving care and support, which ultimately leads to better outcomes and a happier, more fulfilling life.

Another benefit of virtual counselling is enhanced privacy and confidentiality. With online counselling, you don’t have to worry about how you look, how you’re going to get to the office, or who you might see on your way. Since you are able to attend counselling sessions from the comfort and safety of your home, there is no need to be physically present in a counselling office. This means no one sees you enter or sees you sitting in a waiting room. In fact, no one even needs to know that you are in counselling! This can help alleviate any stigma you may be feeling about seeking mental health support.

If you live with other people, you may be wondering how to attend counselling in private! Some tips we have are to schedule your counselling sessions when you know the house will be free. If that's not an option, you can get comfy in your bedroom, close the door, and turn on some music or white noise. You could also sit outside your home in your vehicle to attend your counselling session. Or you could go for a drive to a beautiful park or lookout, and attend your virtual counselling session from your car or in a parking lot. Also, you could ask the people you live with to leave the house, go for a walk, or go for a drive so you can have some time to yourself.

Virtual counselling also provides the benefit of having a greater selection of counsellors. This is especially helpful for those living in small or rural communities who may have limited access to mental health support. Some individuals may not have access to a counsellor in their hometown or the counsellor in the area may not be accepting new patients at the time. If this is something you relate to, online counselling allows you to access a wide range of mental health support right from the comfort of your home. Also, if you have struggled to find a counsellor who suits you, teletherapy can help. You are able to choose a counsellor who fits your specific needs, has experience with your specific concerns, and that you will be able to trust and feel safe with.

With virtual counselling, you are able to be in control of your environment and do what feels good for you! Whether that means you attend counselling sessions snuggled up on your couch, from your office at work or in your vehicle, you can feel safe and comfortable while you dedicate time to care for yourself and give yourself the love, attention, and support you deserve!
